I was fortunate to pick up a cd last week: A Love Supreme Live In Seattle. Giving that version my first listen now! (Recorded in 1965 but released in 2021)
Thank you for those many versions. Haven’t heard that Elvin Jones record so need to hunt it down.
FWIW there’s a Typo in the sentence about Brad Goode relocating to Denver (the city is missing).
Might add Branford Marsalis did a full length version on both audio and video.
And reading the story of A Love Supreme’s genesis from Alice Coltrane and subsequent writing on it from Lewis Porter it’s my understanding that there was written music involved and a clear compositional intention from Coltrane, that may have come into the studio as an arrangement that was then improvised on by the entire ensemble. And Psalm seems almost through composed as Coltrane is hewing close to the poem.
Don’t know for certain that entire suite was improvised on the spot without written material. It seems there were sketches that were elaborated on. ?
Fantastic! I will be spinning it leadoff for our Friday Night Festivities After Work Escape into sound! We live next door to his hometown in High Point NC where his eponymous yearly festival is held. As you stated so well this was his greatest gift to the world although as an introduction you can't go wrong with My Favorite Things. I was raised in the shadow of The Cliffs and was there in the neighborhood when this was recorded. 6 years old in the bosom of it all. Dizzy lived down the block, Leslie (Gore) was my next-to-next door neighbor. Still got the Greatest Hits LP she gave me, even Big Bad John Jimmie Dean lived down the block. I played drums with Wilson Pickett and Bobby Hebb at Clyde Otis's, one day! Two versions to check out I have listened to many, many times: Santana / McLaughlin and Angá. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmIaubt4NWYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EenL2lcz7zc Buy music in all formats it'll last longer. The Wilson / Bobby story is on my pod stack! Thanks Bill!

Friday night homework, lol! Thanks for putting this together, re-discovering that this is an album worth the exploration of its influences.
